According to this discussion a NVMe SSD will work in your PC's motherboard.

it appears that SATA M.2 SSDs do not work in your PC's motherboard.

Both Mr Memory and Crucial scanners say a 2.5" SATA SSD drive (fitted into a drive bay rather than the M.2 socket)  are required. I am confused by all the information/recommendations which are often contradictory.

Is there a definitive answer?

You can do the safe thing and install a 2.5" SSD in the drive bay, but since the motherboard has a M.2 slot, you can install a supported M.2 SSD in that slot instead.

It appears to me from all I could find on the subject, is the M.2 slot supports NVMe drives.

Unfortunately, I could not find any other information regarding this topic.

Many thanks for your help. What you say makes sense. I now have to identify a 'supported M.2 SSD' and preferably a NVMe one.
