Upgrade HP Pavilion 550-159 NG

[ Edited ]
Product Name: Pavilion 550-159 NG
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista

I want to upgrade the graphics card of my Pavilion 550-159 NG, and I understand that this desktop has certain limitations regarding upgrades. I'd like to purchase the GeForce GTX 1050 2G. I know I would have to upgrade the PSU to more than 400 watts (currently at 180). The card is also short (otherwise I doubt it fits).

Would I have to upgrade anything else? Or will it work at all? I have seen similar posts with similar desktops where other cards are suggested, but all are inferior to GeForce GTX 1050 2G. Would a more powerful card work (upgrading the PSU)?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Upgrade HP Pavilion 550-159 NG

HI,

I don't see an issue using the newer graphics cards with the following caveats:

  1. The graphics card fits (measure to make sure).
  2. The power supply matches the recommended minimum wattage as stated by the graphics card manufacturer.

This EVGA GTX 1060 might be a better choice depending on your specific requirements. You'll need a 400+ watt PSU.

Re: Upgrade HP Pavilion 550-159 NG

I ended up buyin PALIT GeForce GTX 1050 Ti StormX (NE5105T018G1F)

It fits, and doesn't need an upgrade in power supply (which was indeed surprising)

Thanks!
