It means if you only have one memory chip, you have to install it in that slot.

If you were to install it in the other slot, most likely the PC would not boot up.

If you have two memory chips, it doesn't matter which one goes in both slots.

Am I able to install another memory chip? If so, how?

The second slot that is mostly missing from your screenshot doesn't have the same clips and slot as the first one?

If not, then your notebook can only support one memory chip.

Here's a photo of both RAM slots, is this what you mean?

It looks to me like you can install another memory chip in the empty slot.

What is the full model number or product number of your notebook?

I can give you the link to the service manual so you can see how much memory you can install in it.

The model is 14m-dw1013dx.

Below is the link to the product specs for your notebook.

You can upgrade the memory and I see that it comes with a 128 GB M.2 SATA SSD.

This would be a pretty cheap way to upgrade the notebook to get a decent amount of performance.

Install an 8 GB DDR4-3200 MHz memory chip and double the memory to 16 GB.

The Crucial memory report for your notebook indicates it can support up to 2 x 32 GB of memory, but that would be overkill.

The second thing you could do would be to replace the 128 GB SATA SSD with a 500 GB NVMe SSD which will be around 4 to 5x faster than the SATA SSD.

So, for less than $60, you can pep up your notebook quite a bit.

I can't find the service manual, and HP only had a link to the manual for the older14-dw0xxx  model series.

The link is broken.
