OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 880-025na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

So I thought I could put a 3090 ti in this desktop (880-025na), however, when I put the card in I got 3 long beeps and 3 short beeps.

I tried clearing CMOS,

disabling secure boot

disabling security on the PCI-E slot (this was a pain to recover from the desktop would not start and to take out the battery and try multiple restarts before it let me in)

Anyways, raised an RMA, I only have the card until tomorrow morning, if you guys have any ideas you would like me to try to get it to work.

I do not know if the graphics card is faulty(I saw no activity on it like no fan spinning or even sound from it, not even a flicker of life) or if the motherboard just rejected it.

I do have a 1000W Gold 80+ PSU so it was not the PSU, not sure if RAM has anything to do with it ( it's the stock RAM that came with the system).

So, my question is what is the best card I can put on this desktop?

The current RX580 struggles to do anything for gaming.

Thanks!

@WarAngelos,

There is no valid reason why your 3090 Ti wouldn't work, especially with your upgraded power supply.

Btw, information of your OMEN By HP Desktop PC - 880-025na is somewhat arduous to come by online.

According to: https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c05588885, your gaming rig is fitted with the Higos (SSID: 8309) motherboard, which according to this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-by-hp-880-000-desktop-pc-series/15776604/document/c0557539..., can be fitted with the following graphics cards:

NonSequitur777_0-1661435480290.png

But these GPUs are based on the original power supply, and don't even come close to a mighty RTX 3090 Ti...

On several of my legacy HP desktop upgrade projects, I had no difficulties whatsoever to make an RTX 3080 OC 12GB work (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Upgrading-HP-Elite... ,https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-Z240-Desktop-Works...), and these desktops were never meant to become lean mean gaming machines.  The point is, your card should work.  At least be acknowledged by your PC.  At this point in time, you are correct to complete the RMA and get your money back, if only because there is a real possibility that the card may be defective -especially if you got it pre-used.

This is the best I can think of, my friend.

Kind Regards,

@WarAngelos,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Interesting, the RTX 3090 Ti should be singing like a tropical bird.

See if this solution works for you: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Omen-870-244-3-long-3-short-beeps-on-startup-R....

Hope this was helpful.

I just tried the Nvidia tool, unfortunately, it won't continue.

It says I do not have an Nvidia card to install this firmware. Well, it is not wrong, I have the RX580.

Desktop won't start with the 3090 ti.

I also tried putting the 3090 ti back in and starting the desktop without a monitor it still gave me the 3 long 3 short beeps.

Thought I would try it with the HDMI cable as well just for the heck of it... No change still beeps at me. ☹️

@WarAngelos,

Let's try this: uninstall all your AMD graphics drivers, and restart your desktop. In Device Manager it should show a "generic" Microsoft video driver for your RX 580.

Next, power down, disconnect power and disconnect everything including your monitor, except for your mouse and keyboard. Swap your RX 580 for your RTX 3090 Ti.

Next, reconnect power and hold your power button pushed in until it beeps and your desktop turns off. Repeat.

Next, reconnect your monitor and restart, and immediately keep tapping F10 to see if you can access BIOS. If you can, exit BIOS, and see if your desktop will boot.

Tried this last night, but I was too tired to post.

Didn't work, it just does not recognise the 3090 Ti.

It might be a bad card and we are just running into a brick wall trying to make it work.

So, should any high-end card work on this desktop?

The problem is these cards are so expensive it is hard to pay this kind of money to just try and see which one works and you never know when an RMA could be rejected on whatever basis, also I can't be buying and returning feels like I am making a loss for the company.

Unfortunately, I don't have any friends who live nearby with good cards that I could try here.

I think I should try one more time with a different card any recommendations?

If the RMA test says it was faulty I will ask for a replacement if it was not then refund it.

Thanks, I had ordered a new one, but to be honest I have horrible luck when buying components.

Almost every time I spend big, I end up having to RMA something.

So it's good to know that it should work and I will give it another go once the RMA is complete.

Yea, another day, another adventure. Good luck next time!  -If you have the time, please follow up how the next card is working out.

While I am on the upgrading topic.

My last question.

Though not necessary, in case I come across some good deals.

It shows 1800x is the highest I can go (which is what I have in the desktop at the moment).

Same for the RAM it shows DRR4-2400

Just wondering if both of these are set in stone or is there a chance of upgrading these any higher.

HP Recommended

@WarAngelos,

It appears that the Ryzen 1800X is the best/fastest CPU for you rig.  Not necessarily or just because HP says so, but because of sources like this one, for example: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/AMD/Ryzen_7/1800X.html.

And the max RAM for your rig is 2 x 16GB of the 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM.

However, if it is the case that your PC is enabled to access XMP in BIOS, or you can access RAM speeds using software such as Intel's XTU (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/resources/overclocking-xtu-guide.html) that would change the picture.

Let me know if you can!
