HP Pavilion Elite HPE-470uk Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I am trying to find out what is compatible with my pc. I use to be able to access the specs through hp site but it is not longer accessible. Assuming it is because the product is no longer supported. I have tried googling it but I have had no luck.

What is the best cpu and gpu?

Also if I change the cpu and gpu will I need to change the amount of power?

Any help would be much appreciated

@Coldcreature22,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

The fastest processor which, on paper at least, would be compatible with your HP Pavilion Elite HPE-470uk Desktop PC (XH761EA) is the Core i5-680 according to: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i3/i3-550.html. with your p/n: 612500-001 MS-7613 Ver:1.1 motherboard (socket: LGA 1156).

Reference: https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=XH761EA.

Maximum RAM would be 16GB ( 4 x 4GB) of DDR3, such as Crucial PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, NON-ECC, UDIMM, 240-pin RAM.

Please be advised that the maximum RAM speed would be 1333 MHz, such as this RAM: Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C-H9 4GB Desktop DIMM DDR3 PC10600 (1333 MHz).

According to HP's specs, your power supply (p/n: 570857-001) provides 460 watt.

You would have to check, but the web references I was able to dig out, suggested that your current (standard) CPU is a Core i3-550. This is a very mediocre processor, with only 2 Cores and 4 Threads.

The fastest graphics card that HP designated for your desktop was the NVIDIA GeForce GT 420.  And that starts to ring alarm bells to me.

Reference: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/10183/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-420.

Even though your 460 watt power supply, theoretically combined with 4 x 4GB of DDR3 RAM, theoretically combined with a Core i5-680 has sufficient power for, say an RTX 1650 low profile/low power graphics card, but I am not sure if this or other more recent graphics cards are even compatible with your motherboard.

Will research some more, but in my opinion, I would be reluctant to spend any money on this system.  There are a lot of inexpensive desktops available via eBay which are much more deserving to be upgraded for gaming and such.

[EDIT:] And what do you know, digging deeper -I stand corrected: the Intel Core i7-870 is also compatible, as apparently is the Nvidia GTX 1050-Ti 4GB and the GTX 960 2GB as per: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-HPE-470uk/10045.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

 Hello, before I buy the GPU and CPU. Will I need to do anything with the bios? Also as you see in the picture above, why does it say status is poor for the intel i7 and gtx 1050-Ti?

Thank you

@Coldcreature22,

There are a couple of reasons why this rig is labeled "Poor".

First of all, this system's primary (boot) drive is a legacy old-school HHD, with terrible ("Very poor": 19.5%) read/write scores.

Make sure that your primary drive is an SSD.

Second, this User had a relative high background CPU usage because of secondary programs running in the background while running the UserBenchMark test, which doesn't help the score.

Thirdly, the Intel Core i7 870's performance suggests to me that it is under-optimized.  I am very confident that we can apply various software adjustments that can be made to boost this processor's score from 56% to around 68% -at least.

Not knowing what your expectations are once you have upgraded your desktop, I do want to point out that there are many other inexpensive legacy desktops available via eBay that could be upgraded much easier to become lean-mean gaming machines.

See if you can purchases the CPU and GPU as affordably as you can.

Hope this was helpful.

@Coldcreature22,

And with regard to BIOS, it appears that this information is not available online anymore.

I can see that @Prométhée looked into it and came up with this BIOS download: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56001-56500/sp56189.exe (in this discussion thread: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-Series/m-...), and I agree with Prométhée's assessment, quote: "Be aware that the update will not solve all the problems, and that it can make the computer unusable in case of problem.
So if you don't have a very good reason, avoid this manipulation."

hi

Solved: MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E bios update and GTX 970 - HP Support Community - 4953636
I did not read everything, but you must have examples, useful
Indeed, it is better to avoid updating the bios, if not necessary
Thanks @NonSequitur777
