HP Recommended

1. The HP support web page currently says the board supports DDR3 memory. IT DOES NOT. Those are DDR2 slots.

2. The HP support web page currently says the board supports:

___

  • Dual channel memory architecture
  • Two DDR3 DIMM (240-pin) sockets
  • Supported DIMM types:
    • PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
    • PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
  • Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Supports 2GB DDR2 DIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB* on 32 bit PCs
*32-bit operating systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
___

Except for pretty much completely screwing up the memory supported (this board does NOT support DDR03, only DDR-2; and the speed grades listed, -8500 and -10600, are also incorrect), the memory section is incomplete and misleading.Someone at HP/Compaq should be fired; they have no idea how to proof a document/web page, not ability to verify technical facts, and no idea how much pain and anguish they have caused people who read the web page and then purchased unsupported memory.

   A. The memory section looks like they cut-n-pasted it from the descriptiion of another motherboard (that supported DDR-3) and never changed it for the Narra6. I have not tested PC2-8000; but PC2-6400 (when unbuffered) and PC2-6400U definitely work - that's what ours came with.  The memoryies listed (PC3-8500 and PC3-10600) are both unsupported DDR3 and those speeds (-8500 and -10600) are not even AVAILABLE in DDR-2. So PC2-6400U (at 800MHz) is probably the fastest memory supported.

  B. Slower DDR-2 (slower than  800MHz PC-5600) probably works, but is not listed.

   C. You can DEFINITELY install two 2GB sticks (total: 4GB) and run Win7 or Win10; I've done it. IF you can find PC2-6400U in 4GB sticks it'll probably work; I haven't tried it. But no matter what the memory size, make sure you are getting DDR-2, unbuffered, NON-ECC memory. Many memories advertised as 'server memory' do so because the support ECC; this board does NOT.

FYU, the 'U' at the end of "PC-5600U" means 'unbuffered'; but a lot of memory sold as PC-5600 is in fact unbuffered; ya gotta ask. But any memory that says "PC-5600U" is the correct speed grade for the Narra6.
