OMEN by HP 40L Gaming Desktop PC GT21-0000a (514R7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an omen by hp 40l gaming desktop gt21 0314 and it came stock with 2x8gb HYPERX RAM. I wanted to upgrade my RAM to 2x16gb for a total of 32gb. I keep seeing conflicting information about which RAM is compatible with my motherboard (HP 8949). Can someone help me figure this out?

This is the RAM I was looking to get:

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series (Intel XMP) DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MT/s CL16-18-18-38 1.35V Desktop Com...

@Arbeanian,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

There is probably nothing wrong with the G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series RAM you referenced, but given the fact that HP gaming desktops tend to be finnicky when it comes to RAM and especially attaining max RAM speed, my concern is that this RAM may get stuck at its "SPD" (default) 2133 MHz RAM speed: https://www.gskill.com/specification/165/184/1536110922/F4-3200C16D-32GVK-Specification.

I am not certain about it, and this G.SKILL RAM may run just fine and at 3200 MHz.  The advantage of buying RAM via Amazon is that you could always return it to get your money back if necessary.

Personally, I would recommend this 2x16GB Kingston Fury Beast RAM kit, with p/n: KF432C16BBK2/32 as seen here: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-FURY-3200MHz-KF432C16BBK2-32/dp/B097K2WKZW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2JHJEPOC7....

I saw your reply too late. I bought the G skill and it seems to work fine. I was under the impression that it when I look under memory and it tells me the speed, it was telling me the speed for both modules; but apparently that's the speed for one. Currently it says 3200 Mt/s.

@Arbeanian,

Well, make sure your RAM actually does run at 3200 MHz: type in: task manager in your lower search bar, and click on Task Manager, then click of Performance, and then on Memory, and then look to the right of Speed.

If it indeed does say "3200 MT/s", then you can be certain your G.SKILL RAM is actually running at 3200 MHz.

Isn't 3200 MT/s equal to 1600 MHz?

@Arbeanian,

That depends on where you obtain that number.

For example:

In Task Manager it is the actual RAM speed, say 3200 MT/S (same as 3200 MHz).

In Speccy or CPU-Z -to name but two software programs, you'll find half that number: 1600 MHz.

This number refers to how DDR (Double Data Rate) SDRAM, the type of RAM used in most computers is often reported: the reported frequency is half the actual data transfer rate.

Yes, multiplied by two you'll get the actual RAM speed: 3200 MHz.

If your Task Manager says 1600 MT/S, then your RAM is running at that speed.
