I've transferred / played video from Sony camcorder to a windows system using firewire and have had some experience with 1394 A & B.  My experience has not all been good.

Most older systems used to have a 1394 port or two built in the motherboard but that stopped a few years ago, at least for windows.  I take it you want to add a Firewire card?   I assume you have some type of software to work with the device.  I thought beatsaudio came with a few select notebooks.

I do not work for HP and I opposed them buying Compaq as Compaq had bought out that worthless DEC and was going bankrupt. It was a mistake back then and still is. If my post is useful give me a kudo and eventually I will be able to upload an avatar of my BMW R1100rt instead of a cartoon. Thanks for reading!
