can I use an alternate power source to power my graphics card independently from the PSU running the main board? I ordered an upgrade 400w PSU from HP but have a PSU that wont fit in the case, and does not have the proprietary P2 power plug. it has the two four plug main board connectors, just not the P2 tiny flat plug. I would like to know if I can just use the separate PSU for the card itself.

In this posting, you were told of the HP proprietary designed PSU required of your machine.

Cobbling anything is not advised, nor could we volunteers suggest such an activity.

I am not sure what you ordered from HP (400W PSU).

I ordered an L04618-800 400w psu that has not arrived, and looks like it has  been confirmed by hp and not shipped since the buy date of 10/12/20. Im holding back "cobbling" to see if the 400w psu upgrade (from the build sheet from HP-parts using my serial number) was an option so I purchased it.  Will be enough to ruin my system or not is my most recent question. I will have to do the bois reset that will disable the onboard video, so will that free up any power consumption?

When you plug in the GPU card, it will replace the video source.
