Is there any image of the front and rear connections on my pc which shows what they are?  The icons next to the ports are not helpful.

The images next to the port will have to be useful to you. 

 

It is time to either get into learning mode, go to a PC store and ask or take a basic class on PCs.

 

They tell you everything about the type and feature of the port connection.

Thanks for that information - I'd overlooked the page.  Unfortunately the symbols stamped next to the  sockets are so small and blurred as to be virtually unreadable. I was hoping to have a diagram to show (in particular) what sort of USB port each was.
