@9a3,
Welcome to our HP Community forum!
You’re right, an i7-8700K should be compatible, like this HP Z2 Mini G4 Workstation User who successfully installed an i7-8086K or this User with an i7-9700K.
Please try this:
Make sure you got the latest BIOS version (01.08.11 Rev.A) from here: HP Z2 Mini G4 Workstation Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support. You'll have to reinstall your old processor in order to do this. I am hopeful that this will resolve your issue.
Please inspect your i7-8700K carefully for any damage, discolorations or debris stuck on the CPU's business side.
- Though I haven't seen many cases, but there is a slim possibility that your particular motherboard is blocking processors with TDPs over 65-watt -meaning, it could be blocking 95-watt TDP processors such as the i7-8700K.
Kind Regards,

@9a3,
Whilst thinking about your issue, try this:
Clear CMOS / NVRAM Reset:
Why: Residual settings in NVRAM may conflict with the new CPU’s power/feature profile.
How:
Power off, unplug AC.
Press and hold power button for ~15 seconds.
Open chassis.
Locate CMOS battery (usually a coin cell) → remove for 10 minutes.
Reinstall, boot system.
Some Z2 Mini G4 units also have a CMOS reset jumper near the M.2 slot -check the motherboard silkscreen for CMOS or CLR_CMOS.
Kind Regards,
