Hi @BuddyG1970,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code 43 and the message "A request for the USB device descriptor failed" typically indicate that there is an issue with the USB connection or the driver for the device. To resolve this problem with your HP dvd740 x03 DVD writer on a Windows 11 system, you can try the following steps.

Check Hardware Connections

  • Ensure the USB cable is properly connected to both the DVD writer and the computer.
  • Try a different USB port on your laptop to rule out a faulty port.
  • Use a different USB cable if possible, to see if the cable is the issue.

Update Drivers

Automatic Update

  • Open Device Manager (Press Win + X and select Device Manager).
  • Find your DVD writer under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right-click on the device with the error (usually marked with a yellow triangle).
  • Select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Manual Update

  • Visit the HP Support page and search for drivers for your specific laptop model and the HP dvd740 x03 DVD writer.
  • Download the latest driver available for Windows 11.
  • Install the driver and restart your computer.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Device

  • In Device Manager, right-click on the DVD writer with the error.
  • Select Uninstall device.
  • Disconnect the DVD writer from the laptop.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reconnect the DVD writer and wait for Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates and install any available updates.
  • Restart your computer if updates were installed.

Use HP Support Assistant

  • Download and install the HP Support Assistant if it is not already installed.
  • Open the HP Support Assistant and follow the prompts to check for updates and troubleshoot hardware issues.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  • Click on Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings and then USB selective suspend setting.
  • Disable the setting for both On battery and Plugged in.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Try on Another Computer

  • Connect the DVD writer to another computer to check if it works. This can help determine if the issue is with the DVD writer itself or with your laptop.

Check for BIOS/UEFI Updates

  • Sometimes a BIOS/UEFI update can fix hardware compatibility issues.
  • Visit the HP Support page, enter your laptop model, and look for BIOS/UEFI updates.
  • Follow the instructions carefully to update your BIOS/UEFI.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a hardware failure within the DVD writer itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
