My HP failed the Smart test, error code BIOHD-8. Much of the research indicates that I need a new hard drive. I'd like to attempt replacing it myself, but am a beginner. I can follow instructions well. Can anybody recommend what hard drive I should purchase? Also, would it be wiser to just take the computer somewhere and let somebody else do it? I don't need anything fancy or over the top. We just use this computer for the internet and to store our photos and music. Thanks much.

Thanks Big Dave. The patch seems to have been installed as the System Information updated. However, the diagnostic still gives a BIOHD-8 error. Do you think that means it's time to replace the hard drive?

It's possible that the damage has already been done. Create the external HP recovery media and backup your data. Look for a replacement HD that is less than 2TB and is a non-advanced format hard drive.
