Blue question mark over E Drive it seems like its gone

Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista

My E Drive is not working and it has a blue question mark over it. in device manager it has a rectangle with an ! in the middle.  How to fix.  My laptop is old its a compaq.

It's possible that the disk-drive is logically divided into both 'C:' and 'D:' partitions.

That would make your CD/DVD drive as the 'E:' drive.

 

So, put a disk into the CD/DVD drive, to see if your computer will be able to read it.

i put disk in and it can't read it.

In "Device Manager", right-mouse-click on the CD-device, and choose to "uninstall" (or "remove") it.

Reboot Windows, and see if Windows _correctly_ re-installs it.

If not, you may have a hardware problem with the CD-ROM device.

Either replace it, or purchase an external CD/DVD writer with a USB interface; the latter is probably cheaper than paying a technician and paying for a new internal CD/DVD device.
