Hi @Courtney311,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Experiencing a flickering black screen on an HP laptop desktop can be frustrating, but it's a relatively common issue that may have several potential causes. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to identify and resolve the problem.

  • Check for updates: Ensure that your operating system, graphics drivers, and BIOS are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers or software can cause display issues. Visit HP's official website and download the latest drivers for your laptop model.
  • Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches or software conflicts.
  • Boot into Safe Mode: Restart your laptop and boot into Safe Mode to see if the flickering persists. If the issue disappears in Safe Mode, it is likely due to a third-party application or driver causing the problem.
  • Disable startup programs: Some programs may conflict with your display settings. Try disabling non-essential startup programs and see if the flickering stops.
  • Adjust display settings: Right-click on the desktop, go to Display Settings, and try adjusting the resolution and refresh rate. Use the native resolution and a standard refresh rate that your laptop supports.
  • Check the display cable: If you're using an external monitor, ensure that the cable connecting the laptop to the monitor is secure and undamaged.
  • Test with another monitor: If you're using an external monitor, try connecting your laptop to a different monitor to see if the issue persists. If the problem disappears on the new monitor, the original monitor may be the cause.
  • Run a malware scan: Malware can sometimes interfere with your system and cause unusual behavior. Perform a thorough malware scan using a reputable antivirus software.
  • Update BIOS: If you haven't updated your laptop's BIOS, consider checking if there is a new version available and update it following the HP instructions.
  • Hardware issues: If none of the above steps resolve the problem, it's possible that there is a hardware issue with your laptop's display or graphics card

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
