I have a 5 year old HP tower computer. Recently experienced log-in problems. When an Admin log-in was attempted the process briefly proceeded and then the screen would go dark. Able to log-in as a Visitor. The computer had a Windows 10 operating system and Norton 360 security installed. Suspected a failed Microsoft software update or Norton update that caused a display driver problem. While attempting to resolve the issue my computer froze. Unable to unlock. In the end my only alternative was a cold shutdown. Waited a few minutes before turning the computer on again. Almost immediately a window (supposedly) from HP appeared offering/suggesting a HP reset. Accepted offer. After the HP procedure was finished a re-install of Windows was suggested. This was also accepted. Over a period of hours (and days) the computer was returned to operation. Also, at the suggestion of HP a 30 day trial of McAfee protection was accepted until Norton protection could be re-established.
Discussed re-installing Norton with someone who has an interest in computers and is more familiar with them than me. He questioned whether the HP Reset was legitimate.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could the offer I accepted be bogus and allowed the installation of malware or a virus on my computer?
