@Darshil2105,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Thank you for your question!

If you're suddenly unable to see icons on your HP All-in-One 24-f0017ne desktop, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Step-by-Step Fix:

1. Check if Desktop Icons are Hidden:

  • Right-click anywhere on the empty desktop.

  • Hover over View.

  • Make sure "Show desktop icons" is checked.

    • If it's unchecked, click it to restore your icons.

2. Restart Windows Explorer:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  • Scroll down and find Windows Explorer.

  • Right-click it and choose Restart.

    • This can refresh your desktop and make icons reappear.

3. Check for a Second Monitor or Extended Display:

If you previously connected to an external screen:

  • Press Windows key + P and select PC screen only or Duplicate.

  • Icons might be appearing on a non-active screen.

4. System Restore (if problem just started):

  • Type “Create a restore point” in the Start menu and open it.

  • Under the System Protection tab, click System Restore…

  • Choose a restore point from before the issue started.

5. Scan for Malware or System File Corruption:

  • Open Command Prompt (then right-click) as administrator and run: sfc /scannow

    This will scan for and fix corrupted system files that may be affecting the display of icons.

  • If error(s) were found, also run (copy/paste/enter): dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • Run Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus.

Let me know which step helped -or if your issue persists!  I'm happy to assist further.

Kind Regards,

@Darshil2105,

Thank you for the update. Since the original steps didn’t resolve your issue and you still can’t see desktop icons, let’s dig a bit deeper. Below are some advanced steps to try:

Step 6: Try Creating a New User Account:

Let’s test if the issue is related to the current Windows profile.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings → Go to AccountsOther Users.

  2. Click Add account → “I don’t have this person’s sign-in info” → then “Add a user without a Microsoft account”.

  3. Create a temporary account, then log into it.

  4. See if icons appear on the desktop.

If icons show up here, the issue is with the original user profile -and I can guide you on repairing or migrating files.

Step 7: Reset Icon Cache:

Corrupted icon cache can cause icons not to show.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one by one:

    ie4uinit.exe -show
    taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    DEL /A /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"
    DEL /A /F /Q "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*"
    shutdown /r

This will force Windows to rebuild the icon cache after restart.

Step 8: Enable Desktop Icons via Group Policy Editor (if using Pro/Enterprise):

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.

  2. Go to:
    User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Desktop

  3. Make sure “Hide and disable all items on the desktop” is set to Not Configured or Disabled.

If none of these steps help, please let me know:

  • What version of Windows 10/11 are you running?

  • Are the taskbar and Start menu working?

  • Do you see any desktop background at all, or just a black screen?

Kind Regards,

@Darshil2105,

If you are still struggling with your issue and if you are not PC-savvy, so to speak, it is best to seek professional help such as a local PC repair shop.
