Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Thank you for your question!
If you're suddenly unable to see icons on your HP All-in-One 24-f0017ne desktop, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Step-by-Step Fix:
1. Check if Desktop Icons are Hidden:
Right-click anywhere on the empty desktop.
Hover over View.
Make sure "Show desktop icons" is checked.
If it's unchecked, click it to restore your icons.
2. Restart Windows Explorer:
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Scroll down and find Windows Explorer.
Right-click it and choose Restart.
This can refresh your desktop and make icons reappear.
3. Check for a Second Monitor or Extended Display:
If you previously connected to an external screen:
Press Windows key + P and select PC screen only or Duplicate.
Icons might be appearing on a non-active screen.
4. System Restore (if problem just started):
Type “Create a restore point” in the Start menu and open it.
Under the System Protection tab, click System Restore…
Choose a restore point from before the issue started.
5. Scan for Malware or System File Corruption:
Open Command Prompt (then right-click) as administrator and run: sfc /scannow
This will scan for and fix corrupted system files that may be affecting the display of icons.
- If error(s) were found, also run (copy/paste/enter): dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- Run Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus.
Let me know which step helped -or if your issue persists! I'm happy to assist further.
Kind Regards,

Thank you for the update. Since the original steps didn’t resolve your issue and you still can’t see desktop icons, let’s dig a bit deeper. Below are some advanced steps to try:
Step 6: Try Creating a New User Account:
Let’s test if the issue is related to the current Windows profile.
Press Windows + I to open Settings → Go to Accounts → Other Users.
Click Add account → “I don’t have this person’s sign-in info” → then “Add a user without a Microsoft account”.
Create a temporary account, then log into it.
See if icons appear on the desktop.
If icons show up here, the issue is with the original user profile -and I can guide you on repairing or migrating files.
Step 7: Reset Icon Cache:
Corrupted icon cache can cause icons not to show.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one by one:
ie4uinit.exe -showtaskkill /IM explorer.exe /FDEL /A /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"DEL /A /F /Q "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*"shutdown /r
This will force Windows to rebuild the icon cache after restart.
Step 8: Enable Desktop Icons via Group Policy Editor (if using Pro/Enterprise):
Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
Go to:
User Configuration → Administrative Templates → DesktopMake sure “Hide and disable all items on the desktop” is set to Not Configured or Disabled.
If none of these steps help, please let me know:
What version of Windows 10/11 are you running?
Are the taskbar and Start menu working?
Do you see any desktop background at all, or just a black screen?

If you are still struggling with your issue and if you are not PC-savvy, so to speak, it is best to seek professional help such as a local PC repair shop.
