Hi @BeachStreet,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP Pavilion laptop freezing up. When a computer freezes and you can't move the mouse or shut it down, there are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem.
- Force restart: Press and hold the power button until the laptop shuts down. Then, wait a few seconds and press the power button again to turn it back on. This action will force the computer to restart and may clear the issue causing the freeze.
- Check for overheating: Overheating can cause a computer to freeze. Make sure that the laptop's vents are clear of dust or debris, and ensure that the fans are functioning properly. You can use compressed air to clean the vents if necessary. If overheating is a recurring problem, consider using a laptop cooling pad to improve airflow.
- Disconnect external devices: Sometimes, a malfunctioning external device can cause a freeze. Disconnect any external devices, such as USB drives, printers, or external monitors, and then see if the laptop unfreezes.
- Update drivers: Outdated or incompatible drivers can lead to freezing issues. Visit the HP support website (support.hp.com) and check for any available driver updates for your laptop model. Download and install the appropriate drivers, especially for the graphics card and chipset.
- Scan for malware: Malicious software can also cause freezing problems. Run a thorough scan using your antivirus software to check for any malware or viruses. If you don't have antivirus software installed, consider installing a reputable one and perform a scan.
- System updates: Ensure that your operating system is up to date with the latest updates and patches. These updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address freezing issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
