Hi @Bwegula,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining your situation clearly. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Microsoft Redirected You

If you’re in the Windows Insider Program, your system runs preview builds. These builds often require activation with a valid product key or digital license. Microsoft typically uses your existing Windows license for activation, but if it fails, they suggest contacting your OEM (HP) because:

  • HP provided the original license when you purchased the PC.
  • OEM keys are embedded in the BIOS/UEFI firmware for Windows 10/11 Home or Pro.

Steps to Retrieve Your HP OEM Product Key

  1. Check Activation Status
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
    • If it says Windows is not activated, proceed below.

  2. Retrieve Embedded Key
    • Press Windows + X, select Command Prompt (Admin).
    • Type: wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
    • This will display the OEM key stored in your HP system firmware.

  3. Activate Windows
    • Go to Settings > Activation > Change product key.
    • Enter the key you retrieved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
