My laptop randomly reset and now has the message it can't sign in. It puts me on a temp account. I tried to delete it and reboot like alot of videos say, and it hasn't worked once. I tried to recover and old version which worked but took ages to sign in and then didn't work

Hi @Jeremy5432,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
When your HP Envy 13-inch laptop boots into a temporary account and displays a "Can't sign you in" message, it's likely related to a corrupted user profile or issues with the Windows operating system. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Create a New User Account:
- Sometimes, the current user profile can become corrupted. Creating a new user account and migrating your data might resolve the issue.
- Steps:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Family & other users.
- Click Add someone else to this PC under Other users.
- Follow the prompts to create a new user account.
- Sign in with the new account to see if the problem persists.
2. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM:
- Running SFC and DISM scans can repair corrupted system files that might be causing the issue.
- Steps:
- Type cmd in the Windows search bar, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This scan will check for and repair corrupted system files.
- After the SFC scan completes, type the following command and press Enter:
3. Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure that your system is fully up to date, as updates can sometimes fix issues related to user profiles.
- Steps:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
4. Manually Fix the User Profile:
- You can try to manually fix the user profile by editing the registry. Be careful with this method, as incorrect changes can cause system issues.
- Steps:
- Type regedit in the Windows search bar and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to the following path
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

- Steps:
- Type rstrui in the Windows search bar and press Enter to open the System Restore wizard.
- Follow the prompts to select a restore point before the issue began.
- Allow the restore process to complete and then check if the problem is resolved.
6. Backup and Reset Your PC:
- If none of the above methods work, you may need to reset your PC to resolve the issue. Make sure to back up your important data before doing this.
- Steps:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, click Get started.
- Choose to keep your files or remove everything, depending on your preference.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.
7. Check Hard Drive Health:
- A failing hard drive can sometimes cause issues like random resets and corrupted profiles. Use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of your hard drive.
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, there might be a deeper issue with the hardware or the operating system, and you may need to consider a clean install of Windows, Or contact phone support for further assistance.
