HP Pavilion HPE h8-1300z CTO Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I've been reading until my eyes are tired. I bought the computer in August 2012 and it runs fine. But, I need to update it to Win10 and I see HP will not test anything old (aka before August 2013). So, don't know if the update will even work or if drivers can be found. I bought a new Win10 sealed software package from a reliable software distributor, so I believe the product is good. Haven't tried anything yet. I have backed up my personal files, documents, photos. Now, I'm almost afraid to use the upgrade. This is a full version of Windows 10 and I believe the desktop can meet the system requirements (1TB 7200 rpm SATA HD,  AMD FX-6120 95w CPU, 10GB DDR3-1600 DIMM Memory 2x4GB1x2GB, AMD Radeon HD7570 1GB DDR3 FH PCle x 16 Eyefinity). Sorry, not a computer geek. Old and frustrated with how much work is involved to upgrade an OS. Just looked at the drivers etc. I had to check going from Vista to Win7 on a laptop. But, can anyone help me avert a mess. At least the computer runs well with the Win7, but nothing is getting supported now except my Norton antivirus.

Hi @Vandyu,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concerns and frustration with the upgrade process. Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is generally possible, but it's essential to take some precautions and ensure compatibility. Here are the steps you can follow to help make the process smoother.

Check System Requirements:

  • Ensure that your HP Pavilion HPE H8-1300z meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10. Based on the specifications you provided, it seems like it should meet the requirements.

Backup Important Data:

  • You've already mentioned that you've backed up your personal files, which is great. Make sure you have a backup of all important data just in case something goes wrong during the upgrade.

Check for Driver Updates:

  • Visit the official HP support website for your specific model (H8-1300z CTO) and check for Windows 10 compatible drivers. If there are Windows 10 drivers available, download and save them to a USB drive so you can install them after the upgrade.

Disconnect External Devices:

  • Unplug any unnecessary external devices (printers, scanners, etc.) before starting the upgrade.

Run Windows Update:

  • Before attempting the upgrade, make sure your Windows 7 is fully updated. Run Windows Update to ensure you have the latest updates and patches.

Run Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant:

  • Download and run the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant from the official Microsoft website. This tool will check your system for compatibility and provide guidance on any potential issues.

Install Windows 10:

  • Use the Windows 10 installation media you have acquired to perform the upgrade. During the installation process, you'll be prompted to keep your files and apps, which should preserve your data and installed programs.

Post-Upgrade Steps:

  • After the upgrade, check for any hardware or driver issues. Install the drivers you downloaded from the HP website. You might also want to check for Windows updates again.

Antivirus Software:

  • Since you mentioned Norton Antivirus, ensure that it is compatible with Windows 10. If needed, update it to the latest version.

Remember, while most upgrades go smoothly, it's always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected issues. If you encounter any problems during or after the upgrade, having a backup of your data allows you to restore your system to its previous state.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you so much for this step by step guide. I will perform this later in the week and if all goes well I will let you know. Also, if I encounter problems, I will share those. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that I should accept the solution after I give it a try. I am hoping that I can find the drivers I need. Your recommendations will get me started in the right direction. Much appreciation. I like HP products and have two laptops in addition to the desktop.
