Hp Envy 700 series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

A couple nights ago my power surged for an unknown reason. There were no storms in the area, just a tiny bit of rain that did not even show on the weather radar. It blacked out several blocks. My desktop computer which is a hp envy 700 series, monitor, speakers, printer, & cable modem are all plugged into a high dollar surge protector.  There are only 6 outlets on it and that is all I had plugged in that outlet.

I turned my computer on this morning and it beeped 2 times then  beeped 3 times, then shut itself down and restarted. The tower comes on, but there is no signal to the monitor it does not even act like it spins up at all. If I put a disk that would normally auto start in the drive it does nothing.

The normal white lights for the wifi, and the 3 disks do not light up either. The computer acts and sounds as if it is in sleep mode. But it is not.

The screen, key board, nor mouse light up either.

The fan is running but there is nothing there.

I have taken everything off of that surge protector, and put it all into a new one.

I unplugged the cord from the back of the computer itself, and left it sit for over an hour and then reconnected it all.

Still nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could do? What it could possibly be?

The surge protector that it was all plugged Inot has a $100,000 plugged in product replacement guarantee. I paid quite a bit for it. And would like to think that maybe just maybe it gave the computer some kind of protection against this surge.

It was a pretty powerful surge.

Thank you for reading, and any help offfered.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

First thing I would do is open the case and disconnect all but the single boot drive -- the one containing Win10.

Then, plug the PC into a standard wall outlet in another room, on another circuit, and see if it starts up.

If it does not, then see if you can work your way through these diagnostics to determine the problem:  http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=NoPowerorBootIssues.net&section=ccweb&as=true&SFS=tdoc

If nothing helps there, then is your PC still under the original one-year HP warranty?

We can proceed when you provide the information.

Thanks

It sent out a 5 beep code, I looked it up. It stated it is an issue with either the motherboard or Ram.... 😞 I did have it hooked up to a surge protector guaranteed to protect my items. Or they would replace them up to $100,000.

Is there anything else a 5 beep code would mean. It did the beeps them powered itself down and restarted. Then there was nothing.

Those beeps indicate a hardware failure -- as indicated in this HP thread:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07107?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0001

If, according to that thread, you have a damaged system board, that is going to be costly and difficult to replace.

Given the previous responses, above, you should take the computer to a qualified computer technician, for "professional" diagnosis of the problem, and, more importantly, to produce a signed statement that you can submit to the vendor of that surge-protector, to exercise their "protection" guarantee.

It's possible that your disk-drive is OK, so that you can "rescue" your personal files, and copy them to a new computer.

Your computer: http://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c03962180

(manufactured on/after October 2013) may have other "salvageable" parts, e.g., DVD-writer, RAM, power-supply.

But, if you change the motherboard, your license to use Windows 10 "dies" when the motherboard dies.

You clicked "I AGREE" to this license-term, when you first started-up your computer.

However, if you contact HP, or check http://PartSurfer.hp.com

you may be able to purchase an identical motherboard, and that _might_ enable you to continue to use the license.

It's a tough call: hope that the current power-supply is OK; hope that the current disk-drive is OK; hope that the CPU is OK; hope that you can buy a motherboard that can use the same CPU/RAM, hope that you can use the current Windows license, as compared to buying a replacement computer.

Thank you I am just absolutely sick over this. That is why I paid the extra money for the surge protector.... to prevent such an issue. But as it seems it did not.
I plan on taking it to a computer specialist tomorrow to have them do the process of elimination on it, as well as document the findings.
So far as the head company of the surge protector, I have made a claim, and am waiting for a call back....
It is said that the heather write a check for the items destroyed. Here's to hoping they have the same tower.

I am also having my monitor checked out as well to find out what all I need to claim on it.

Still trying to wrap my head around all of this.
