Dear all,
Tried to download a recover dvd from microsoft and typed in the serial nr and the responce was:
The product key you specified appears to apply to software pre-installed by the manufacturer. Contact the device manufacturer and ask for recovery options for the software.
Can I download it from HPs webpage?
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Jonas

I looked at: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-8440p-notebook-pc/4095872
for the available downloads for your HP computer, and did not find any applicable download, nor any information about how to purchase a "System Recovery Set" from HP.
However, if you have access to a "retail" copy of Windows 7 (Home? Professional?) and the 25-character product-key on the label on the outside of your computer, and the other downloads from the above web-page, you can install Windows, using your product-key, and then install all the HP-specific device-drivers.

There is a Recovery kit available from Computer Surgeons. They list two different kits. This one http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-18060-recovery-kit-vl969av-for-hp-elite-book-model-number-8440w-mo...
and this one
One is Win 7 Pro 32bit and the other is Win 7 Pro 64bit. Since you actually listed 32bit, I assume that is what you will pick but check the model number that is the difference between them. One model number ends in a "w" and the other a "p"
I'm not an HP employee.

If your computer still has the original 2 GB of RAM, or if you have upgraded to 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM, then you should pick the 32-bit version.
If your computer has been upgraded to its maximum of 8 GB of RAM, or even to 5 GB or 6 GB of RAM, you need to pick the 64-bit version.

FIRST, boot from that "other" Windows DVD, and choose "Repair my computer", to see if its automated trouble-shooting will resolve your problem.
> If I have another Windows 7 DVD, can I recover an HP laptop?
Yes, if you have the 25-character Windows 7 "product-key" printed on the Microsoft decal on the bottom of your laptop.
SECOND, I would be tempted to buy a new disk-drive, remove the current disk-drive (containing your Personal Files), and connect the new disk-drive. That way, if anything goes "wrong", you still have your current disk-drive.
Plus, the warranty on your current disk-drive probably expired, a few years ago.
Compare to proactively swapping-out a bald automobile tire, before it "blows" (and "blows-away" all your Personal Files).
After installing Windows onto the new disk-drive, access the Windows "Device Manager", to see which device-drivers are missing.
On another computer, you'll need to go to the HP Support web-site for your model, and download for those "missing" device-drivers, probably:
* networking-adapter
* video-adapter
* HP Support Assistant
copy the downloads to a USB memory-stick, and move the stick to your HP computer, and install them.
Now that you have Internet access, run the HP Support Assistant. It will download other device-drivers for your hardware.
Also, run Windows Update, several times.
> Is it just a HP recover kit i need?
It certainly is easier to use the HP kit, but is not "required".
