Retrieve Data from bad hard drive

My laptop message says: Boot Device Not Found.  Please Install an Operating System on your hard drive

If you have important data on the drive don't try to fix it by reinstalling windows. If you can, take it out and put it in a usb to hard disk caddy or put it in another pc as a secondary drive and with luck you should be able to lift the data off first before attempting any repair.  There should be data on how to do this safely on your products hp page and on Youtube for generic use.  Trying repairs on a failing drive only makes things worse.  However, the drive may not be failing, it may just have lost the boot partition,  This can happen after a bad shutdown during an update.  Get the data off first though.
