It says my secure boot is enabled but it’s in grey. Secure boot is not acknowledged by steam. Please help.

Let’s walk through a focused path to help clarify and potentially restore Secure Boot functionality.

 

Why Secure Boot may appear greyed out or inactive

On HP Stream devices, Secure Boot is controlled through UEFI firmware. If the setting is greyed out, it typically means:

  • The system is in Legacy Boot mode or CSM (Compatibility Support Module) is enabled.
  • The Platform Key (PK) or other Secure Boot keys are missing or not enrolled.
  • The system has been reset or reconfigured in a way that disables Secure Boot enforcement.

 

Step-by-step actions to restore Secure Boot recognition

1. Access BIOS Setup

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

 

2. Check Boot Mode

  • Navigate to System Configuration > Boot Options.
  • Confirm that UEFI Boot Mode is enabled.
  • If Legacy Support is enabled, disable it.

Secure Boot only works in UEFI mode. Legacy mode disables Secure Boot controls.

 

3. Restore Secure Boot keys

  • Go to Security > Secure Boot Configuration.
  • If Secure Boot is greyed out, look for an option called “Clear Secure Boot Keys” or “Restore Factory Keys”.
  • Select Restore Factory Keys and confirm.

This re-enrolls the Platform Key and other required keys to activate Secure Boot.

 

4. Enable Secure Boot

  • After restoring keys, the Secure Boot Enable/Disable option should become selectable.
  • Set it to Enabled.
  • Press F10 to save and exit BIOS.

 

5. Verify in Windows

  • Press Win + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
  • Check:
    • BIOS Mode: Should say UEFI
    • Secure Boot State: Should say On

If it still says “Off” or “Unsupported,” the keys may not have been restored correctly.
