My desktop stopped booting to the point I could not even get to task manager. I then tried to use the HP recovery tool to take the machine back to factory settings. This failed mid way and now I can’t even get to the recovery options to try again. I have gone back to PC world where I bought it and they said I will have to pay for the repair. Does anyone know, should the inbuilt recovery capability be covered under warranty?

Hi
HP don't support Currys AFAIK, Currys do their own, cheaper deal I suppose, but a nightmare for buyers, and gets HP a bad reputation. Which they bring on themselves IMHO.
So.
NB: I got mine from Argos.
Here's a thought
The external DVD/USB is the key.
NEVER have Fast Start-Up enabled, it sets a dirty bit on the partition table and makes recovery difficult.

Worthless at Currys obviously.
If in doubt please ask.

Hi
If the reason for the failure is hardware based, in that the Hard Disk is failing/failed, then the HDD itself is covered.
I hope that the PC is not in the hands at Currys/PCworld currently.
First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.
Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
AND/OR - Power on your PC, press Esc (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).AND/OR - Windows Logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B(This key sequence actually restarts you graphics drive(W10 only).)AND/OR - If you’re using multiple displays, try projecting video to a different monitor.Press the Windows Logo key + P, select a display, and then press Enter.
What exact repair are they going to quote you for???

To get started, you will first need to have a license to install Windows 10. You can then download and run the media creation tool. For more information on how to use the tool, see the instructions below.

I did check the hardware and everything came back as passed so fairly happy this is a software issue. That was part of my annoyance, the £60 repair is to basically put on a fresh OS which as you say, if I can get another computer I can do myself. Thank you for the instructions and links.
I won’t be buying another HP device from PC world now I know HP don’t support anything bought via them.
i would still like to get the HP recovery back in there though once it is fixed. I know if I lived in America I could get it but is there a way to get it in the UK?

Thanks for the help. My plan, find out old laptop and get that updated and the recovery media downloading etc. While that’s being sorted, I will take PC back to PC world and see if they will just down right swap it based on not saying what it says on the box. Then learn a lesson and never step foot in PC world again. :0)
cone home and fix it myself.
thanks for all the advice.
