HP Slim Desktop - S01-aF1003nan 6530
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have made a big blunder and bought the above desktop expecting that the HP name would give a good product.  I have never known such a slow computer to boot up and then keep up with the required work. I have upgraded the memory to 8Gb which did help but not enough.

If there any   HP reps watching this then is it possible to get a replacement desktop   and/or some advice on speeding ti up please.

Linux and other manufacturers are beckoning.

hi

https://support.hp.com/lv-en/document/c06647212

if we refer to the configuration given here, there would be a lot to change.
in my opinion it is not worth it if you can change it
but you will need to contact your reseller, or hp directly

Hello,

please focus on some steps are shown in below.

  • Uninstall unused programs. (AP)
  • Delete temporary files. Whenever you use internet Explorer all your browsing history remains in the depths of your PC.
  • Install a solid state drive. (Samsung).
  • Get more hard drive storage. (WD)
  • Stop unnecessary start ups.
  • Get more RAM.
  • Run a disk defragment.
  • Run a disk clean-up.

Specifications for your computer: HP Slim Desktop - S01-aF1003na Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support

state:

  • Memory: 4 GB DDR4 memory [you say that you now have 8 GB]
  • Internal Storage: 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA HDD
  • Processor: Intel® Pentium® J5040 (2.0 GHz base frequency, up to 3.2 GHz burst frequency, 4 MB L2 cache, 4 cores)

So, I think that your "bottle-neck" is the "spinning" disk-drive. Replace it by a SSD (Solid State Disk).

Also, note that the first time that a brand-new Windows PC is connected to the Internet, Windows Update will "call home", and will keep your processor and your disk-drive busy for a long time, as it updates.

If you are using WiFi, disable it. Power-off your computer. Disconnect any Ethernet cable. Power-on your computer, to see if it starts-up any faster when it has no Internet access.

How many seconds from the first "spinner" icon as Windows begins to start until your desktop's icons and wallpaper and icons at "bottom-right" are fully visible?

We can say what we want, we will not make a much more powerful computer
Certainly add / replace some components to improve the computer
but take stock, the processor is low-end, the memory already made, no graphics card, and to add one, it is still costs and for little possibility

you have to see the price of the computer, the cost to get something usable.

very little scalable computer
frankly, the best is not to waste time with this, and think carefully about a new correct model

It depends on your definition of "much". The computer's owner already has "doubled" the RAM, and having a processor with 4 cores, and up to 3.2 Ghz per core is "plenty-fast", unless the owner wants to use the computer for "gaming". So, other than a really-expensive upgrade of the processor, the next logical, and not expensive, step is to replace the "spinning" disk-drive by a SSD. Booting from an SSD is very fast, and that improvement in boot-up speed is what the owner wants.

keep up with the required work.

Please tell us what "work" you are doing. If you are manipulating large files, and that causes much input/output to the "spinning" disk-drive, then upgrading to an SSD will greatly help.

Look at the specifications of the computer!
https://support.hp.com/emea_africa-en/document/c06639986
Intel Celeron J4025 (Gemini Lake-R) 2.0 GHz base frequency, up to 2.9 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 4 cores
he chipset on this motherboard is combined with the processor into a single integrated circuit called System on a Chip (SoC). This technology combines the processor and chipset functionality into a single physical package.
Same type of motherboard in picture

https://support.hp.com/emea_africa-en/product/hp-slim-desktop-pc-s01-af0000i/29022932/document/c0642...

apart from the ssd we can not change anything on it

if it is the same I cry for the user
But otherwise cool we can install an M2

Of course, to write mails, or to look at internet pages, this may be sufficient.
But if the user wants a machine that will serve him for a while for important games or applications, this is not enough.
But anyway curious, everyone responds except the person concerned
