I've had this happen on both my desktop and laptop. The volume icon on the taskbar will just suddenly disappear. The explanation I had found was something to do with cleaning the desktop of unused buttons. But I used the volume quite often.
How do I get this back up on my taskbar? I have gone into the control panel and under Taskbar and Start Menu. Then into the System Icons menu to change the behavior on the notification area. But there is no way to change the volume back to "On" It is basically a unchangeable option.
I had fixed this before but forgot to write down how I did it unfortunately.
Does anyone know why they have the behavior change on a button that is used often? They should ask you if you want it removed rather than just doing it.

Go to Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Double-click
Sounds and Audio Devices Properties Panel is now displayed.
From the Volume(tab) - place a checkmark/tick in the box in front of "Place volume icon in taskbar"
Go to Control Panel - Taskbar and Start Menu - Double-click
Taskbar and Start Menu Properties panel is now displayed.
Select - Notification Area(tab) - place a checkmark/tick in the box in front of "Volume" in System Icon list
I don't have a Win 7 machine readily available at this moment. Sorry. And I can't remember.
And another thing.... I can't remember how to fix it in Windows 7.

You can also install a Patch from the URL Given below to fix this issue:
If Sound works, and Speaker icon does not appear in System Tray, please perform the steps given by previous Respondent. If Sound Work, click Start->type Services.msc in Search Window, and Press Enter.
Right click on the following Services, and click Restart or Start.
Multimedia Class Sheduler
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

So will that patch prevent the icon from disappearing on its own? I don't like to load anything unless it is absolutely necessary.
I put the computer on this morning and it was back so not sure what the deal was.

Hello mws_1984, If you are using Windows 7, you might try this procedure.
Go to Control Panel, Taskbar and Start Menu, Notification area, Customize Tab, then locate Volume, and select Show icons and notifications.
This should put the Volume Icon in the Task Bar and keep it there.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.
Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem.

1. Go to Control Panel>Apearance and Personalization
2. Look for "Taskbar and Start Menu", click "Customize icons on the taskbar".
3. Click on "Turn System Icons on or off".
4. Now hit "Restore Default Icon Behaviors".

This worked for me - I found it at:
Delete IconCache.db in your C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local folder
Then restart Explorer
