Drop my laptop.  Hard drive is dead. Just replace it with a old hard drive that I have reformat. Now, I do need a window to use the computer again. Can't remember the Key product since windows was installed when I purchased the laptop.  What would be my next step ?

Regards

Eric

What is the full model number or product number of your notebook?

How to Find Your HP Laptop Model Number (Video) | HP® Tech Takes

Notebooks that came from HP with W8 and newer have the Windows product key encrypted in the BIOS.

You don't need the product key to reinstall Windows.

Notebooks that came with W7 and older should have a Windows product key label on the notebook's case.

Hi Paul Tikkanen,

Thank yoy for your reply. Here's the info requested from the outside bottom of the computer.

model number 15b-bso58ca

prod number: 2SP97UA  3ABL

Since I removed the original Hard Drive and replace it, now I need a windows to get it up and running again.

Which Windows was used in 2017 ?

Where do I get a free copy since it was purchased with the original hard drive ?

How do I do the installation since the HP laptop doesn't have access to internet at this point in time ?  By USB key I suppose ?

Regards and thank you for your help.

You're very welcome, Eric.

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps

Since you have to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is: 2SP97UA#ABL

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for your help.

I have followed your step but it doesn't seems to work.  I get to the HP cloud recovery tool.  It want to be install on my other laptop... will it do any configuration change on my  Dell ?

Regards,

Hi, Eric:

You install and run the tool as administrator on your Dell PC.

I have used it many times on my Dell Optiplex PC to create HP recovery images.

Using it on any model PC has no effect on the operation of that PC.

Good morning Paul,

I will try it tonight or this weekend.
