the computer boots up normally to the user sign-in screen.  after entering pin it goes to blank (blact) screen. only way to exit is to do a hard reboot.

rebooted pressing escape key and did a diagnostic test.  received a hard drive failure ID of

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

You can check this error code at this site (Link).

The operating system HDD is failing.

You will have to replace the HDD.

This situation gets involved.

You may lose data if you have not backed up data contained on this disk. You have to reinstall the operating system (OS) on the new HDD.

Did you create system disk image backups so you can restore the current OS disk image to a new storage device?

This situation is a bad scenario if you have no OS backups or data backups and don't have HP Recovery media.

You can install Windows 10 clean by creating installation media at this site (Link). All is not lost, but you will lose data if you have no backups.

Regards
