Please provide more details. Did you buy a M.2 SATA SSD or a M.2 PCIe NVME SSD?
The specs at this HP Site show M.2 support for both SATA M.2 drives and PCIe M.2 drives. Upon further inspection it seems your PC may not support PCIe NVME drives. HP's product specs are a little fuzzy on this.
Your PC should boot to an M.2 drive if you have a compatible operating system installed on a compatible M.2 drive.
