@mzlowlez

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the administrative password has been forgotten and it requires a reset,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you create a password reset disk when the PC had been working fine?

If you have one, here's what you need to do:

If you have forgotten the password of your user account, and you are unable to sign in to your account, you can reset the password by using a password reset disk. If password reset disk was previously created, find the disk or USB flash drive and use the following steps to reset the local account password.

   NOTE:

This method applies to local accounts only. A password reset disk will not reset a Microsoft account password. If you do not have a password reset disk, use one of the other sections in this document to access Windows.

  1. Turn on the computer and attempt to enter the sign-in password at the Windows sign-in screen.

  2. If the password was entered incorrectly, a message displays stating the user name or password is incorrect. Click OK.

  3. Insert your password reset disk, and then click Reset password.

  4. The Password Reset Wizard displays. Click Next.

  5. Select the password key location from the drop-down menu, and then click Next.

  6. In the spaces provided, type a new password, type it again to confirm, and create a password hint to help you remember the password in the future. When done, click Next.

  7. If the password was reset successfully, click Finish.

  8. Use the new password to sign in to Windows. You do not need to create a new password reset disk for the new password.

If there are no other accounts with Administrator rights, you do not have a password recovery disk, try these other options:

  • You can perform an HP System Recovery to completely erase all files, including password information, and go back to the way the system was when it was first purchased. For more information, see HP Guided Solution - Performing an HP System Recovery.

  • Call local computer repair and service stores. Local stores may offer password recovery services for a fee but results cannot be guaranteed. This service is not available from HP and using password recovery services is done at your own risk.

If you are unable to locate a local service to recover your password, one alternative may be to obtain password recovery software. This software is not available from HP and using password recovery software is done at your own risk.

   CAUTION:

Some Web sites that claim to offer password recovery services might steal private information or install malicious software on your computer. Research thoroughly and use a trusted site if you decide to use this method.
