Hi@rgm80228, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that you have a hp pavilion p7-1247c laptop and the laptop does not shut down by pressing the Shutdown button at the StartMenu, the light is still on. Not to worry, I'll be glad to assist you with this case.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Did any updates happen on the laptop after which this issue started?

While you respond to that. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
  • Power ON the laptop.

During my research, I came across this HP document that helps fix overheating related issues in Windows 10: https://hp.care/2J4TLJW

Secondly, you may download and install the BIOS update for your laptop via this link: https://hp.care/2Lr4Fbb

NOTE: Please have the charger connected to the laptop while updating the BIOS. Because the BIOS update must not get interrupted due to the battery draining out

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
