dear hp community

a couple of weeks ago, i was clearing out debris from the wired keyboard by holding it upside down and vigorously tapping each end to the table.  the pc shut off at that point.  when i pressed the button on top of the tower i heard one beep and the lights flashed on the front of the tower as usual.  then the flashing stopped but the monitor did not sense anything.  after that, i found the only way to get it going is to unplug the unit (while it is on), plugging it back in and then pushing the start button.  this causes it to start as usual (without it beeping once).  the issue now is that if i try to put it to sleep it shuts down instead of going to sleep.  so i am left to leave the unit on 24 hours a day.  other than the issue described, the pc works fine.  i have tried all the usual fixes along with blowing out the dust from inside the unit.  also i've  pressed on the cables and boards inside the unit in case something had come loose.   i do realize that since the unit is a decade old, one of the components may have broken down.  based on my description of the problem, i would appreciate any suggestions on possible fixes to this issue.........................................thanks!!

Please check the settings in Power Option

  1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click System and Security and then click Power Options. The Power Options window displays.

    Figure : Power Options

    Power Options window
  3. Select one of the available plans (Recommended Settings, Power saver, Balanced, or High performance).

  4. Click Change plan settings.

In the System Settings window, configure the desired behavior of the Power button, the Sleep button, and the display panel lid, for when the computer is running on battery power and for when it is plugged in to a power source (if applicable).

  5. Click Save changes, and then restart the computer.

  6. Click Start , and then click Sleep from the Windows Shut down menu to see if the issue still exists.

I also suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Keep me posted how it goes

thanks for the advice, but i've tried all the conventional things including downloading and deleting hp support assistant after it it proved to be useless, especially virtual assistant which quite often can't seem to discern a simple sentence.  hp does not seem to want anything to do with a pc which is out of warranty, and especially one 10 years old like this one.  after lucking out and actually being able to connect with a live hp tech agent on the phone, the standard answer was to take my pc to the local repair shop!  just gonna have to leave this pc on 24/day, as (other than not going into sleep mode) it works as well as it did when i purchased it ten years ago.................many thanks!!

Thanks for keeping us posted.

As a last resort, you could try a System Recovery back to Factory settings but that will Reset the Notebook completely
