My desktop does not run unless the power cable in constantly plugged in - is this correct or should it be able to run without it for a period of time?

@Dinoblue -- yes, your All-In-One computer needs full-time electrical power -- it is unlike a laptop/notebook/tablet/smart-phone device, that has its own battery.

Your computer was designed to occupy a lesser amount of physical space than a normal "desktop" computer with a separate monitor.
