The error "Boot Device Not Found" on an HP laptop typically means that the system is unable to detect a bootable device, such as the hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) where your operating system is installed. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, including a hardware failure, BIOS misconfiguration, corrupted boot files, or connection issues.
Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings
Sometimes, the system might not be set to boot from the correct device, or the device might not be recognized in the BIOS.
Enter BIOS/UEFI:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it back on and immediately press the ESC key or F10 key (depending on your model) repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
- In the BIOS menu, navigate to the Boot tab.
- Make sure the HDD or SSD is listed in the boot order. If it's not, check the "Boot Options" or "Boot Device Priority" settings.
- If the drive is listed but not first, change the boot order to make the internal drive the first boot device.
Check for Bootable Devices:
- Go to the System Information section in the BIOS and see if the hard drive/SSD is recognized.
- If it’s not detected, it could be a connection issue (loose cables) or a hardware failure.
Reset BIOS to Default: If you've made changes to BIOS settings recently, or if you're unsure, try resetting the BIOS settings to default:
- In the BIOS, look for an option like "Restore Defaults" or "Load Optimal Defaults".
- Save and exit, then reboot the system.
2. Check the Hard Drive or SSD Connection
If the BIOS doesn’t recognize the internal storage, the connection might have been disrupted.
- Power off the laptop and remove the battery (if it's removable).
- Open the back panel and check the connection of the hard drive or SSD. If you’re comfortable doing this, make sure the cables or connectors are securely attached.
- If you’re using an SSD, make sure it’s properly seated in its slot.
3. Run a Hard Drive Test
HP laptops have a built-in diagnostic tool to check for hardware issues, including problems with the hard drive.
- Run HP Diagnostics:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press the ESC key or F2 key repeatedly as soon as the laptop starts to boot (this might vary based on model).
- Select "Diagnostics" from the menu.
- Run a Quick Test or Extensive Test on the hard drive to see if there are any errors or signs of failure.
- If the test fails, it indicates a possible hardware failure, and you may need to replace the hard drive.
