I believe I successfully downloaded the software for officejet pro 8630 on my windows 10 HP Envy desktop computer, and the computer is not recognizing that the cable has been securely connected between the computer and the printer. Any ideas?

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!
I read your post about problems with your 8630 printer and wanted to help.
You said you "downloaded" the software -- but did you "install" it? (These are not the same thing).
I've gone through this process with an 8620 printer, so I would recommend the same to you:
1) Uninstall and remove any existing printer drivers and software
2) Disconnect the 8630
3) Reboot the PC
4) Install the HP Full Freature software -- but do NOT reconnect the printer until the installer prompts for it
5) When done, reboot the PC
After this, the printer should work.
