Hello this is an older computer originally run on Windows 7. It got updated to Windows 10 some time back and ever since then it doesn't recognised the DVD ROM writer. I have tried the HP assistant and run the diagnostics which come back Long Drive test is corrupt and cancels the test on the ROM. Is this due to the dreaded Windows 10 and is there anything I can do. I once read that Windows 10 does not recognise drivers that are not compatable with it. Is it just a new DVD ROM/writer I need or internal or external.

Thanks for replies. I did another search on HP and found that Windows 10 had problems picking up older drivers. There was a suggestion of going on to device manager and searching for the drives. You then deletel the drivers and reboot the computer. The drivers are then automatically reinstalled. Hey presto I can now use my DVD driver writer.

Sorry no one has responded, but I'm a little confused by your terminology.

If you are referring to the DVD read/write component in your PC, and it is DVD-ROM, that means it only READs DVDs and can not write them.

An old dvd device is likely to be an IDE interface, meaning, that at the back, the cable that comments it to the motherboard is a wide flat cable that plugs into two rows of brass pins.

DVD drives available today are SATA, and they use a narrow data cable about 1/4 inch across.

If you have an IDE drive, it's going to be very difficult to replace it as those have not been sold for years.

You could replace it with a new DVD drive for under $20 USD (in the US) but then you would have to buy and connect an IDE-to-SATA connector and you would need a Tech to do that for you.
