Reading SD cards can be a problem even if they are ejected properly using a windows command. Worst case is to turn the computer off, not just reset it.
I find it easier to have a USB-3 adapter for the SD and if I cannot properly "eject" it then I can use another USB port to make it work.
Unaccountably, sometimes clicking the file manager "eject" or using the USB icon to eject does not work and one cannot find the app or service that is using the SD and all you can do is pull it out, put it in another USB slot and run a repair on it. This is not just an HP problem.
