HP Pavilion a1312n won't open any IP address

HP Recommended
HP Pavilion a1312n
Microsoft Windows XP

I have done a complete system restore.  I am connected to broadband via ethernet cable.  Was trying to install wi-fi adapter and was prompted to update service pack.  However, using factory-installed browsers (IE, Netscape, MSN) no matter what IP address I enter, I get message 'No Internet Connection'.  Have contacted my ISP - no problem on their end.  Laptop connects fine.  Was told to contact HP but system is retired.  Please help.

Hold down the "Windows" key.

Type 'R'.

Release both keys.

Into the window that opens, type   CMD

Press ENTER.

Into the window that opens, type    IPCONFIG  /A

Press ENTER.

You should get output that incudes something like:

   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.138( Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : December 14, 2017 5:46:11 PM
   Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . :    December 21, 2017 5:46:10 PM
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
   DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Tell us exactly what you see, on your Windows XP system.

Take the IP-address of that "gateway", and type    PING   sss.ttt.xxx.yyy

substituting as necessary, and press ENTER.

Tell us exactly what you see.

The only difference in the output is IP Address is 192.168.0.6.  (It is not listed as IPv4.)  Ping stats for 192.168.0.1 are 4 packets sent/received with approx. round-trip times of 1ms.

Hmm. All 'IPv4' IP-addresses are in that format: [number][dot][number][dot][number][dot][number]

where each number is between 0 and 255, inclusive.

Anyway, IP-addresses on your network are '192.168.0.xxx'.

Your computer is '.6', and the "gateway" to the Internet is at '.1'.

Entirely normal.

Good. Your network-adapter has a valid IP-address, and is working fine, and can communicate with your router.

If you have a cable-modem (or DSL-modem) that connects to your wired/wireless router, power-off it.

Wait a few seconds, and power-on it, and wait for it to fully reboot.  Try to access the Internet.

Power-off your router. Wait a few seconds.  Power-on your router, and wait for it to fully reboot. Try to access the Internet.

Or ....

If you have a "combination" modem & router, as supplied by your ISP, just do the power-off/wait/power-on sequence.

I have a combo broadband, and I have even tried changing ethernet cables.  I still get the  "page cannot be displayed" on the "Cannot find server - Microsoft Internet Explorer screen.

Which version of Windows?

(I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but I went to the MS firewall Advanced tab and the firewall is enabled for both 1394 Connection and LAN.  However, under the Settings tab, nothing is checked under "Services" or "ICMP".  Just curious - everything is still at default settings. )  Thank you for efforts thus far.  I appreciate your time.
