IF the desktop has a standalone monitor, and it is not an All-in-One, then you connect the video input jack on the monitor to the same kind of jack on the laptop. If you don't have the same jacks, then you will need an adapter to connect the laptop to a video cable that does connect to a jack on the monitor.
