Solved!

i was able to play cd's until two day's ago tried device mgr. got no where

I was able to play cd's until two days ago i put in cd and no little window almost like it doesn't recognize it. i tried divice mgr. when i right clicked it just showed properties and another I thought I'd ask what i need to do I'm not pc literate but i can follow instructions. thanks

Welcome to HP Support community.

 

Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Find and fix problems with devices.

  2. Click Next to start the troubleshooter.

  3. Follow the instructions to fix any problems found, and then test a disc in the drive.

Test the drive for a hardware failure

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Press the power button to turn on the computer, and then immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.

  3. Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

  4. Click Component Tests.

  5. Click Optical Drive, and then run all the available tests. Have a working CD or DVD available to complete the tests. Each test takes 1 to 2 minutes to run.

  6. Follow any instructions to resolve any issues found, and then test a disc in the drive.

Enable AutoPlay

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Click Hardware and Sound, and then click AutoPlay.

  3. Select the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices setting.

  4. Next to each DVD, Blu-ray, and CD type, click the drop-down menu, select Ask me every time, and then click Save.

     Select Ask me every time in the AutoPlay settings

  5. Test a disc in the drive.
