I'm having the same exact issue as you are.  My second monitor works fine when connected to another computer.  It starts up just fine with the HP logo too, but after that and after the HP Envy is booted up and ready to go, the external monitor goes back to black.  Have you had any luck?  I see that my post is just a few weeks after yours.
