Hi - brand new monitor, have set it up and can barely hear anything - I've tried every adjustment and setting I can find both on the monitor and in windows and I can barely hear anything even though everything I look at states the volume is at 100% - can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

I have gone through your post and would like to help

Are you using an HP computer?

Do you experience the same issue when using external speakers or earphones with the computer?

This will help us identify if it's an issue with the monitor or computer

Keep me posted

I bought a brand new HP Pavillion about 3 weeks ago which I had plugged into my TV using an HDMI cable as the PC did not have a compatable VGA port - lots of problems with keyboard and mouse not working, screen freezing and more. Raised a support case and after many calls and many hours, one of the techs said it was a compatability issue and I need to buy a new monitor which I did. The PC was a replacement for an older HP Pavillion. When the new monitor arrived, I plugged the old PC into the TV using the VGA cable and everything worked perfectly which led me to believe that the problem had been the use of an HDMI cable rather than a VGA cable.

I set up the new HP Pavillion in my office and connected the new HP 27fw 27" monitor (with audio) using the supplied HDMI cable. Everything seemed fine untill I connected to Sky News - the audio was barely audible. I went through every setting and ran all the troubleshooters but nothing made any difference with everything stating that there was no problem. I noted that the monitor had 3 connector ports but the PC had only 2. I am left wondering if the problem is connecting with an HDMI cable but as I don't have a cable that fits the PC I can't test that Theory.

So, my question is this - am I missing a setting somewhere or is the monitor faulty or is HP creating the issues with PC's and monitors by supplying only HDMI cables rather than VGA cables that fit the PC?

@aromate_1,

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

In the Playback tab, select Digital Output Device or HDMI option. ... Then the HDMI sound output will be set as default. If you do not see the Digital Output Device or HDMI option in the Playback tab, right click on the blank place, then click Show disconnected devices and Show disabled devices on the context menu.

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Cheers!

Sorry - doesn't make a difference. I've ordered an HDMI to VGA adaptor in the hope that connecting to the VGA port might make a differnce

@aromate_1,

Are you not getting the sound from the computer or the monitor?

Have you tested the audio with a headphone?

Meanwhile, the audio troubleshooter might be able to fix audio problems automatically.

To run the troubleshooter

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type audio troubleshooter, select Fix and find problems with playing sound from the results, then select Next.
  2. Select the device you want to troubleshoot and then continue through the troubleshooter.

You can also launch the troubleshooter from audio Settings. Select Start  > Settings > System  > Sound  > Troubleshoot.

If running the troubleshooter doesn't help, continue to the next tip.

Check to make sure your audio devices aren't muted and haven't been disabled.

  1. Right-click the Speakers icon  on the taskbar, and then select Open Volume mixer.
  2. You’ll see a set of volume controls for your devices. Make sure none of them are muted. If any of them are muted, you’ll see a red circle with a line through it next to the volume control. In that case, select the volume control to unmute.
  3. Check your device properties to make sure that your devices have not been disabled by mistake. Select Start  > Settings  > System  > Sound .
  4. Select your audio device, and then select Device properties. Be sure to select Device properties for both the output and input devices.
  5. Make sure the Disable check box is cleared for the output and input devices.

If that didn't solve your problem, continue to the next tip.

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select it from the results.
  2. Select the arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand it.
  3. Right-click the listing for your sound card or audio device, such as headphones or speakers, select Update driver, then select Search automatically for updated driver software. Follow the instructions to complete the update.

If Windows doesn't find a new driver, look for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow those instructions. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling your audio driver.

To uninstall your audio driver

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select it from the results.
  2. Select the arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand it.
  3. Right-click the listing for your sound card or audio device, select Uninstall device, select the Delete the driver software for this device check box, and then select Uninstall.
  4. Restart your PC.
    • Note: Be sure to save documents and any other current work before you restart.
    • This restart will automatically prompt your PC to reinstall your audio driver.
    • To restart, select Start  > Power  > Restart .

If those options didn’t work, try using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows.

To use the generic audio driver that comes with Windows

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select it from the results.
  2. Select the arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand it.
  3. Right-click the listing for your sound card or audio device, then select Update driver Browse my computer for driver software Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
  4. Select the audio device whose driver you want to update, select Next, and follow the instructions to install it.

If these steps didn't solve your audio issue, visit your device manufacturer’s website and install the most recent audio/sound drivers for your device.

If you have audio issues after installing updates

If your audio was working before you ran Windows Update and now isn’t working, try rolling back your audio driver.

To roll back your audio driver

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select it from the results.
  2. Select the arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand it.
  3. Right-click the listing for your sound card or audio device, then select Properties.
  4. Select the Driver tab, then select Roll Back Driver.
  5. Read and follow the instructions and then select Yes if you want to roll back your audio driver.

Firstly, thank you for your help. I spent the best part of 3 hours with one of your HP Suppot techs yesterday - they had remote access and went through all the steps you describe to no avail. The new Pavillion PC was meant to be a replacement for my older HP Pavillion so we connected that to the monitor using the VGA connection and, whilst it wasn't perfect, it was much improved. I also connected a pair of old speakers to the new Pavillion and the sound is perfect through the speakers so, either the monitor sound is faulty or the fault lies in the use of an HDMI cable because both sound and picture were improved when using a VGA connection. I have ordered a VGA to HDMI adaptor which arrives on Monday and the tech has scheduled another session for Tuesday - I'll post the results on Tuesday as I'm sure I can't be the only one going through this nightmare

I am so grateful for the brilliant tech people who have tried to help me out of this nightmare - I have been a loyal customer of HP for many years and currently have 3 HP PCs and a printer. The products have always been brilliant but this has been a nightmare. As both the PC and Monitor are HP costing me almost £1,000 I fully expected to simply set them up, connect them together and enjoy the experience but the reality has been a total nightmare. I repeat that the tech staff have been brilliant - so far, 4 different people all connecting remotely for hours at a time and yet no-one has been able to resolve the issue. I'll post again on Tuesday following my scheduled session with one of the techs with the final outcome of this saga.
