HP Recommended

I recently upgraded from a 5 year old MacBook Pro to a new one. I was using  the HP25es monitor with the old one, but the new one will only show the wallpaper and upper bar (apple logo, etc) and not the dock or apps. The monitor will still work if I hook up the old computer. All other connections to new Mac are fine and I have gone through the routine of plugging and unplugging to no avail. Any suggestions?
