I bought a brand new hp pavilion (B&O) i7
when starting it says check HDMI in cable and turns off. Any help would be appreciated

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
While you respond to that, I suggest you do a Power Drain
Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)
Restart the computer and if you still see the " check HDMI cable " message, please check and press the HDMI Source Button to switch the display.
