Dual monitors for HP Elitebook Folio G3

HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G3
Linux

I have a HP Dock Connector to Ethernet and VGA Adapter (http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=G7U78AA&opt=&sel=ACC)  that I use to connect my laptop to an external monitor (HP ProDisply P221) and the wired network. I now want to connect a second monitor (another ProDisplay P221) to my laptop. What are my options? I don't want to buy a full docking station. I read somewhere that a VGA splitter cable would not be useful as it simply duplicates the same display as one sees on the first monitor. I have an HDMI port available on my laptop. Can I use this port with an HDMI to VGA cable and connect the HDMI-to-VGA output to the second monitor? Will this give me a continuous (and NOT a duplicate display)?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

The link give me 404 that means no good. Anyway, sounds like you wanted 3 monitors (including laptop screens even you won't use it) therefore you need a DisplayLink certified dock.

Again, I can't see the existing dock therefore I can't tell you need a fifferent dock or not.

Regards.

Hi,

No, that dock is not a DisplatLink certified adapter (sorry, I don't call it as a dock). You need something like

     http://www.displaylink.com/products

or from HP:

      http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=D9Y32AA&opt=&sel=ACC

to be able to use two external monotors.

Ok, but shouldn't the hdmi to vga adapter work for this as well? I mean, I have an hdmi port so would it not support additional display (provided i can find hdmi-to-vga cable)?

Hi,

I don't know what is the HDMI-VGA cable your talking about but HDMI uses digital signals and VGA uses analog signals. You need a proper converter to convert from digital to analog. And from my tests w/o a proper adapter/dock which supports multi external monitors, you won't go far.

Regards.
