Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have attached an HDMI TV as a 2nd monitor, but cannot get any audio on my TV. Video is fine. What is wrong?

@AnaVQ, Thanks for your quick response and time.

You can select only one device as default at a time.

However, you can try the steps recommended below.

1. Go into Control Panel, then Sound.
2. Look for the Recording tab.
3. Select your microphone/HDMI TV as the default device, and press OK.

1. Press Win+X (Windows logo key and X key)  at the same time.

2. Select Control Panel in the pop-up menu.

3. View by “Category” and click on Hardware & Sound.

4. Click on Sound.

5. Select HDMI TV and click Set default button at the bottom.

In some cases, there is no headphone option alone but Speakers/Headphone. If that’s your case, select that and click Set default button at the bottom.

6. Click OK button.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

Hi! @AnaVQ, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you are unable to get audio output using HDMI connection.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?

Have you tried checking with a different HDMI cable?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned you are unable to get audio output using an HDMI connection on your PC.

Please try few steps mentioned below.

Open the Device Manager in Windows 10.
Navigate to Sound, video, and game controllers.
Now connect your PC to TV using HDMI connection.
This will show some “HDMI Audio” related driver under the above section.
Now right-click that item and UNINSTALL it.
Now right-click Sound, video, and game controllers and select “Scan for hardware changes“.
This will install a typical driver which is something like this – “Device with HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT SUPPORT”.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

• Control Panel, Sound, Manage Audio Devices
• The Soundbox will pop up.
• On the playback tab, you should see two icons. One for your laptop speakers, one for the external monitor/TV.
• Double click on the Laptop speakers, then click "Set Default" button on the bottom.
• The Laptop Speakers will be "Checked".
• Select OK and exit.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot HDMI issues with your PC.

If the issue still persists try updating the drivers using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

Okay, I have updated the driver, and I can get audio on my TV/2nd monitor -- but ONLY if I choose it as the default, in which case my speakers don't work. I understand that "Windows outputs sound to only one device at a time," but then why can't I choose which one I want by turning the devices on and off?
