HP ENVY Desktop - 750-124
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

No sound. I've worked for two days with troubleshooting videos and tutorials for fixing the problem. Nothing works.

  • The HP help app sees the computer but not the monitor.
  • The device manager items for the monitor are not the same as those on the troubleshooting directions.
  • The computer imagines that speakers or headphones are supposed to be plugged in and tells me they're not. I disabled those choices, but the story doesn't change.
  • I've repeatedly reinstalled the High Definition Audio Driver and the Realtek soemthing or other, but they don't show up in the device manager.
  • I tried to reinstall the Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 driver, but Intel says it won't work because the manufacturer altered it.

The monitor came with two cables - a power cord and what I supposed is an HDMI cable.  The cord is plugged into the HDMI 1 port. I've also tried it on the HDMI 2 port, but obviously that isn't right.

Does it sound like this situation can be solved, or should I just return the computer and monitor to BestBuy and go for a different brand system?

Hi:

Looking at the specs for the monitor, I see no reference to it having built in speakers.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05078309

And no HP consumer class desktop PC that I know of comes with a built in speaker.

I would imagine you need to buy a pair of PC speakers and plug them into the audio out jack in the rear of the PC.

Thank you. It never occurred to me that there would be no sound coming out of the monitor by itself. So glad I asked before spending the rest of the night on it.

You're very welcome.

You would think that if a monitor had 2 HDMI ports, that it also would logically mean that it has speakers like a TV, but that is not always the case.

Most monitors do not come with built in speakers, and HDMI is becoming the new standard for hooking video devices up.

That is why I carefully reviewed the specs for that monitor before replying, and I wanted to make sure your model monitor was one of the majority that do not have built in speakers.
