This issue has been going on for more than a year now, and I really can't afford a replacement pen as I'm in a tight financial situation currently.

I've noticed that when the pen is hovering, there's an input on the screen despite the nib not touching it.
I've tried almost everything; I've uninstalled / disabled HID drivers (both "compatible pen" and touchscreen), tried to find updated drivers (despite my laptop saying that all my drivers are up-to-date), tried to replace the nib, replace the battery, try to install old drivers to see if that worked, but NOTHING so far has worked for more than 30 minutes. I'm pretty sure it's not a touchscreen issue per say, but a pen issue, as another pen (the Lenovo Precision Pen 2) works perfectly on my screen for hours without issues.

I really need a fix! 😞

Hi @K2XSF,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Tilt Pen MPP2.0, where it writes while hovering above the screen, can be frustrating. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try before considering a replacement:

Calibrate the Pen:

  • In some cases, recalibrating the touch input might solve issues related to pen sensitivity and hover detection. You can do this through the "Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input" option in your tablet or PC settings.

Update Firmware:

  • Make sure that your HP device’s firmware is updated. Sometimes issues like these can be resolved by installing the latest updates. Check HP Support Assistant for any available updates for your device.

Touchscreen Settings:

  • Check if there are any specific settings related to pen input in your device's settings that might be causing interference. You can try resetting these settings to default.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Make sure no applications are running that could interfere with the pen input. Sometimes, third-party applications designed for pen input can cause conflicts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Hi! Thank you so much for replying to my post! 😄

Unfortunately, after calibrating my pen and checking for any HP firmware updates, nothing has changed!
I have reset all of my pen settings to default, and really nothing seems to work 😞

have noticed, however, that the issue seems to be somehow related to how long I've had my laptop on...

Hi @K2XSF,

Thanks for the update. Since calibration and firmware didn’t help, let’s try a few deeper steps that often resolve hover‑writing issues with the HP Tilt Pen MPP2.0:

1. Reset Pen & Touch Drivers

Open Device Manager > expand Human Interface Devices.

Right‑click the HID‑compliant pen and HID‑compliant touch screen and choose Uninstall device.

Restart your laptop, Windows will reinstall fresh drivers automatically.

2. Disable “Visual Effects” Interference

Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.

Turn off hardware‑accelerated GPU scheduling if enabled.

This reduces latency glitches that can cause phantom input.

3. Test in HP Diagnostic Tools

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (Esc > F2 at boot).

Choose Component Tests > Touchscreen.

This confirms whether the issue is hardware (pen sensor) or software.

4. Adjust Pen Pressure Curve

In Windows Ink settings, reset pen pressure sensitivity.

Sometimes a corrupted curve makes the pen register hover as a light press.

If another pen (like your Lenovo Precision Pen 2) works fine for hours, that strongly suggests the HP Tilt Pen hardware is degrading. These steps may stabilize it, but if diagnostics show failures, the pen itself may need replacement eventually.
